The Roy Saga!

Oh Pretty Woman…one of the most famous lines in a song ever! Those three words solidified their place in American Culture when it was the theme song of a movie of the same title! Of course I’m talking about, the Julia Roberts, Richard Gere classic, “Pretty Woman!” I have to admit it was,”Pretty Woman,” that introduced me to Roy Orbison’s music!

Well, I’ve been forced to challenge my Roy Orbison music knowledge! Today I got what I consider a very difficult task. I have to try to find a Roy Orbison song to record. It’s difficult because there are so many amazing songs to choose from! I’m having a very hard time even nailing it down to 5 songs let alone 1! I’ve been listening to some of my favorite Roy Orbison songs over and over again, trying to determine which song I could sing the best!

At first I was thinking, “Blue Bayou,” would be perfect! It’s a great song, I’m very familiar with, but then it hit me……..I’m no Linda Ronstadt!! And even though, “Blue Bayou,” is Roy Orbison’s song, everybody thinks of Linda Ronstadt’s masterpiece vocal when they think of, “Blue Bayou,” so that was out! Then I thought, “Cryin,” would be great! Talk about a classic! Then I thought, wait that song is the definition of a classic, and I’m not the person to mess with a classic! So from there, I just decided to go through songs of Roy’s I didn’t know! It was the first song I listened to, and I knew it would be perfect! It’s called, “Careless Heart,” and I’m really excited to start working on it tomorrow!

RINGSIDE: A Fight For Kids!!

Last year, Doug and I attended for the first time, “RINGSIDE: A Fight For Kids!” Ringside is charity event benefitting the Charley Foundation! The Charley Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports charitable agencies addressing the needs of children! The Charley Foundation focuses on children that endure, abuse, neglect, critical illness, chronic illness, poverty, homelessness to name a few. It’s a great organization, and event, so Doug and I were excited to go back this year!

Besides being a Black Tie event, with great music, and auctions, Ringside is also a night of boxing! The music this year was great! The first act to perform was Tiffany! Yes, former teen sensation Tiffany! It was so much fun! Bridgette Tatum was next and rocked as always, though when Smokin’ Joe Frazier joined her on stage for, “Mustang Sally,” it brought the house down! Who would have thought Joe could sing? It was awesome!

Aside from spending time with friends and raising money for an amazing organization, I was honored to meet some of the families and incredible kids that have benefitted from the work of The Charley Foundation! I’m always so blown away by the strength of kids! They are are the best of everything, and have such a phenomenal way of looking at things. Also, I can’t say enough about the families that watched their loved one go through such difficulties and can still smile and remain strong. There are so many wonderful people in the world, and I am honored I met some of them tonight :)

Boys Bath Time!

I called last week to try to get Windsor and Bentley into the groomers, but was shocked to find out they were booked solid until the middle of the month! With two very smelly boys in hand, I knew what had to be done! I wasn’t looking forward to it, but I couldn’t deal with their smelliness any longer!

I decided Bentley was going to be the first one to get his bath! Poor Bentley, he’s always the first victim! He was actually pretty good about it, and was in and out of the tub in five minutes! Next up, I had to blow him dry! Well, anyone with a Maltese will tell you, drying their hair is one of the worst experiences ever! It takes forever, and they hate it!! Bentley was not pleased with life, but since he’s so small, it’s fairly easy to get him to hold still! It took about 30 minutes, but after some hard core blowing drying, he smelled great, and was as adorable as ever! Windsor watched all of this, and decided to hide from me! He knew he was next, and was doing everything possible to make sure he didn’t get a bath!

Unfortunately for Windsor, he’s not the best hider there is! His idea of hiding from me was going in the farthest corner from me, and stand there! I picked him up and started running his bath water! I felt so bad, because the second I put him in the tub, he started violently shaking! As I bent down to put shampoo on him, he decided to jump on me! Oh yeah….nothing like the wet dog smell! LOL! I put him back in the tub and washed him as fast as I could! When it came time to blow dry Windsor, I knew this was a two man job! I called in Doug for reinforcement!

The Boys bath time was a success, but I have to say, groomers have a really hard job! I am more grateful for them now more than ever! It’s nice to know if push comes to shove, I can make the boys look good, but I also know now, to book their grooming appointments a lot more in advance!

Ash Wednesday!!

I woke up this morning and went online to find out when the afternoon mass would be, so I could get ashed! I missed the early mass, but there was a 12:10pm mass that sounded perfect! I could go to mass then run the million errands I had on my list! I normally wear my hair back on Ash Wednesday because it’s easier for the Priest, to give you the ash cross when your hair isn’t in the way!

For those of you who don’t know, today is Ash Wednesday! I know there are several faiths that participate in Ash Wednesday, but since I’m Catholic, I can only speak about how we recognize Ash Wednesday in the Catholic faith. Ash Wednesday signifies the beginning of Lent! Lent is a season of repenting and reflection that prepares us for Christ’s Resurrection on Easter Sunday! On Ash Wednesday, you go to mass and the Priest, dips his thumb in ashes, (made of blessed psalms from the year prior, holy water and incense), and makes the sign of the cross on your forehead. The cross on your forehead shouldn’t be wiped off, and also signifies repentance, and sacrifice.

I got to mass about 10 minutes early, and there wasn’t a parking spot to be found! I was getting nervous! I drove around for 5 minutes until I gave up and headed for the parking garage! Of course the parking was on the 5th floor! By the time I parked the car and walked down 5 flights of stairs, I walked into the cathedral at 12:13pm, and there wasn’t a seat to be found! There were already about 30 people standing in the back of the cathedral, so I joined them! Mass went by really fast and before I knew it, mass was over!

Not that I forgot, my forehead had a huge black cross on it, but I kind of did, that was until people stopped dead in their tracks to stare at me! It was kind of funny actually, because you could read people’s mind. I noticed there were 3 distinct stares that found their way to me. They all started the same, but all ended very different! The first stare is what I call the “I Get It Stare,” they were the people that stared in total confusion, but eventually figured out it was Ash Wednesday. The second stare I refer to as, “She’s Crazy Stare,” these stares were when the people just looked at me like I was literally insane, and needed helped! LOL! I think this was the funniest stare actually! The third and final stare is what I like to call the, “Inquisitive Stare,” they of course looked at me like I was crazy, but eventually came up to me and asked why in the world I had a black mark on my forehead! Who would have thought Ash Wednesday, could be so interesting outside of church!! LOL!

The Case Of The Missing Diamond!!

Still in Columbus, my Dad, sister, niece and I decided we should go shopping! Columbus has a lot of great shopping places, but Easton is our favorite, so we all got ready and headed to Easton!

Our first stop of the day was Macy’s! They were having massive sales, plus we had coupons, it was looking like a very promising day! Krystie, Phoenix and I went to our section, and my Dad when to the men’s section! Krysite, Phoenix and I grabbed a ton of things and headed to the dressing rooms! I only had three things to try on so I was done, when I heard my sister gasp!

As fate would have it, she looked down at her hand, and her diamond from her wedding ring was missing! I thought I was going to throw up! She was of course hysterical! I got down on the floor and ran my hands all over the carpet praying to find her diamond! I kept telling her not worry about it, that’s what insurance was for, but inside I was dying! I was determined to find her diamond! Phoenix was determined I was going to find it too, because she kept saying, “Karli you need to find my Mom’s diamond! This is so bad!”

I left my sister and niece in the dressing room and proceeded to retrace our steps in the store. I must have looked like a crazy person! I was saying the, “Dear Saint Anthony Prayer,” OUT LOUD! In case you’ve never heard of the, “Dear Saint Anthony Prayer,” it goes like this, “Dear Saint Anthony please come around for something is lost and cannot be found.” To be honest, I can’t even begin to think of how many times I’ve used this in my life, but I can only remember it not working once! I’m a big believer in it, so definitely try it out sometime! Anyway, back to the case of the missing diamond, I was running my hands on the floor, carpet, clothes, racks and there was no sign of her diamond! I was so dreading going back to my sister, and having to tell her I didn’t find her diamond!

You know how I said I can only remember the, “Dear Saint Anthony Prayer,” not working once??? Well thank God this was NOT that one time! Saint Anthony heard us, came around, and we found her diamond! Krystie found it on the floor in her dressing room! Case of the missing diamond…closed!!

Wii Bowling!!

Doug and I babysat my niece Phoenix today! Not that I’m biased or anything, but she is quite possibly the most amazing little girl ever! It’s really funny because she looks exactly like my sister, but acts exactly like me! LOL! My poor sister!

Needless to say, Phoenix and I are extremely close! We always have the best time! After a solid two hours of hide and seek, we were looking for a new game to entertain us! Then finally it hit me….the Nintendo Wii was there!! We started off by making her Mii character aka her avatar on screen! She was hilarious trying to decide which shape face she wanted, eyes, mouth, hair ect! Finally she had made all of her decisions and her Mii was complete!

Next up, Doug and I taught Phoenix how to do Wii bowling! It was hysterical! I was laughing so hard watching her bowl! When it comes to competitiveness, Phoenix got the worst possible combination from our side of the family and her Dad’s side of the family! She’s not about being #2 and gets furious if she doesn’t win, so she was more than determined to beat Doug and I! She did beat me, but she couldn’t beat Doug, and she was not pleased! LOL! We bowled all night long, and Phoenix loved every minute of it!

Superstar!!

I woke up to quite possibly the best thing in the world, my niece Phoenix! She decided she couldn’t wait for me to wake up, so she was my 8:30am wake up call! And let me assure you, Phoenix is the only one that could ever get away with that! LOL! I told Phoenix I was excited for one thing and one thing only, to watch her perform at her dance competition! She laughed and we went to the kitchen for Apple Jacks time!!

When I saw Phoenix in her costume all ready to go on the stage I almost died! She looked so grown up, it was crazy! Phoenix had 3 dances to do, and I was counting down the minutes until she went on stage! When she walked out on stage for the first time, I couldn’t help it, I started sobbing!

After 3 amazing performances on stage I came to one definite conclusion, my niece is a SUPERSTAR! I was so incredibly proud of her, especially considering she’s only 4!! I was so happy I flew in to see her! It was the best day!!

Buckeye Bound!!

I had only one thing on my mind: getting Windsor, Bentley, and me packed! Not only were we going to be catching a flight to Ohio! We could NOT be late! I wasn’t just going back to Ohio for any reason. I was going back to watch my niece Phoenix, perform at her dance competition! This was serious business, and I didn’t have time for any delays from myself or my flight!

I’m a big believer in Southwest! I know a lot of people hate it, but I have to say, I’ve flown with them more times than I can count, and I’ve only had one bad experience! I was counting on them today, because like I said, I could not be delayed! Well, not only was my flight not delayed, I arrived in one of my favorite places in the world, Columbus, Ohio 15 minutes early! GO SOUTHWEST!

I have to say no matter how long I live in Nashville, Ohio will always feel like home! Even though there’s no place I’d rather live than Nashville, I love being Buckeye Bound! It always feels good to be back home, and most especially to spend time in my adopted Ohio hometown of Columbus!

Country Radio Seminar Wrap Up!!

The last two days of CRS were crazy for me! I was busy from bell to bell, and I loved every minute of it! Thursday kicked off with interview after interview. One of my favorite stops was with Mike Betten from KLMJ in Hampton, Iowa! I first met Mike at last year’s CRS, not only has Mike been extremely supportive of me, we’ve kept in touch, and I visited him in Iowa, so by now, we’re old friends! Another great thing about Thursday was getting to participate in a few Public Service Announcements for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. After a full day of interviews, Thursday concluded with the GrassRoots Promotion dinner at the Revolving Restaurant on top of the Sheraton Hotel! It was a lot of fun! I got to see a bunch of the DJ’s who have been so supportive of me, and meet the ones that have also supported me, but I hadn’t met yet! It was an awesome night, and great way to end the day!

Friday started with an interview by Rosemary Young! Rosemary is an old friend of my publicist, so we had a great time! I felt like I had known her for years too when we were chatting! Our picture was even on Country Aircheck, (I put it at the bottom)! And even though I had talked to him on the phone and felt like I knew him, I finally met in person Steve Martin from LexCountry in Lexington, KY! Another great thing about Friday was running into a couple of my favorite DJ’s, Gator Glass from Froggy in Frankfort, KY, and Ed Carter from WKSR in Pulaski, TN! It’s always great to see friends when you least expect it!

Country Radio Seminar 2011 has officially concluded! I had a blast! People are always surprised to hear that I like getting interviewed, but I really do. I think it’s a lot of fun, and a good way for people to get to know me! Plus, it’s always very interesting for me to see the different questions I get asked! Though I would have to say my favorite part of the week was getting to meet so many new people, and catch up with the people I already knew! All in all, I would have to say my 2011 CRS experience was perfect and I can’t wait for next year!!

Country Radio Service Begins!!

Have you ever had one of those nights of sleep where you don’t sleep at all, you just keep checking the alarm clock? Well, that’s exactly what I did! It all started at 12:30am! I watched the clock almost constantly until finally my alarm went of at 3:30am!

I was waking up bright and early for my first interview of CRS week! I was getting ready to chat with Moby from Moby in the Morning! I have to say I kind of felt like a zombie! Considering I was running on about 45 minutes of sleep! I found myself fantasizing about hiring someone to do my hair and makeup while I slept! LOL! Believe it or not, I was able to get ready in record time! I even went back to bed for 15 minutes before I left!

Sarah Majors, the fabulous singer and guitar player came with me to play and sing during my radio interview! Sarah had me laughing and smiling at 5 in the morning! I didn’t even think that was possible! LOL!

I sat down with Moby, and we had a blast! Moby loved my single, “I Didn’t,” so much, he was laughing out loud the entire time I was singing! It was so much fun, and a great way to kick off CRS! Hopefully many more great days like this to come!

Lots of Love,
